Who are we?
Staveley Carnival Cooperative was formed in January 2000 with the aim of creating an innovative and exciting arts project for Staveley. Founder member Shelley Barlow has lived in the village all her life and dreamed of an arts extravaganza which involved the whole community. The cooperative was formed by a group of friends who have worked tirelessly since to make Staveley Carnival Community Arts Project one of the most exciting events in South Lakeland. Staveley used to have a carnival but sadly this ended in 1968. On the morning of July 19th 2000 the streets came to life again with a funky new style of carnival. The whole procession is fuel free with all the participants on dancing or cycling through the streets.

What do we do?
We promote cohesion across a broad spectrum of the community encouraging participation in diverse and inspiring arts programmes.
We provide opportunity for participants to increase their skills and self-confidence and to recognise the value of their community.
We open access to the arts for all ages in rurally isolated areas.
We promote an environmental ethos emphasising the importance of reusing and recycling materials, and encouraging fuel free transport.

Why?
Because we believe in the importance of celebrating the arts in our community. It’s hard to describe the positive energy created during the carnival project.
